30 Thoughts of a Gym Novice

It’s been a month now since I joined the gym. And I’ve been getting my penny's worth. I’ve tried several studio classes, which I’ve enjoyed, some more than others. I thought I’d tell you a few thoughts that ran through my head when I set foot in the studio for the first few times. (Who am I kidding, I still think most of them).
1. Which spot should I take up.
2. She’s way too close. Get outta my space. Maybe I took her favourite spot. Oh god, maybe there's a whole studio hierarchy I’ve upset.
3. Why is she looking at me. What are you staring at? Maybe if I smile. Oh there you go. She seems nice.
4. What equipment do I need for this class? Oh I’ll just follow her.
5. Well I’m going for the small weights.
6. No one else has the small weights.
7. Everyone has to start somewhere. Be confident. They were all here once.
8. Shoes on or off?
9. I like her top. Everyone is really colourful. Is there a studio class fashion shop I don’t know about? Am I the only one in a T shirt?
10. Warm up. Ok, I can do this, this is easy.
11. You want me to do what? Lower? My arse won’t go any lower!
12. My legs hurt.
13. Pick up the weight? Ok. Oh. Glad I got the lightest one.
14. She looks really fit. I wonder how long she’s been coming.
15. I think I’m going to die.
16. Thank goodness.
17. Lie down. Yes I can do that. I like that music.
18. Crunches. Oh god.
19. Why am I going up when everyone else is going down.
20. 8 more? Shit. I think I’m definitely going to die.
21. How long have we been here? Oh.
22. Her arms are really nice and toned. I wonder how many times a week she comes.
23. So now I’m sweating. I wonder what I look like from behind. I should have gone for the spot at the back.
24. Water.
25. Yey, stretches. I like stretches.
26. Agh! Something just cracked.
27. I wonder if that’s good or bad.
28. She’s really flexible. I wonder if I could…nope.
29. Over already? But I just got started!
30. Wow! That was great! I feel great! I wonder when I can come again?

The Green Gables Happy Paper Club Review

the green gables2
I was obsessed with stationary at school. Until I was in high school I moved every couple of years and so I became a pen pal collector of my friends I’d left behind. Writing letters on pretty stationary was something I loved to do. And I was always happy if I came home to find I’d received one in return. Now, through blogging I find I’m sending and receiving mail from different corners of the world, as well as some of those pen pals from many years ago.  And it makes me as happy as it ever did to see the mail on my door mat.
I was more than excited to be able to review The Green Gables Happy Mail Club. A subscription box of loveliness for all stationary lovers.
I tried a one off taster box, but you can sign up for a monthly subscription if you want to.
My box contained all kinds of goodies. The first good thing about the box is it fits through your letter box. So you wont miss it if you are out. Nothing more annoying than knowing you have to wait for the next day to get your happy mail.

The meal Planner. I’ve never used a meal planner. I fumble along from day to day wondering what to have for tea, looking in the fridge for inspiration and then realising I’m lacking the one vital ingredient for my chosen dish. I buy things and then find them the following week all lost and lonely and out of date at the back of the fridge. This could be the beginning of the new meal planning me. And there’s even a lovely pencil included in the box to write it with. (Pictured above)
Thank you Card. Because there’s always somebody to thank in your life. Whether it’s for a gift, a thoughtful action or just because they are wonderful, everyone appreciates a little note of thanks.
Printed card. Tomorrow is a day with no mistakes in it yet. So true.
Wildflower Seeds. A little extra surprise was a packet of seeds. We’ve (aka Mr D)  just planted some flowers ready for the nice weather (that’s why it rained all day today) and I can’t wait to put these somewhere to brighten up the garden a bit more.
Happy Post Day Stickers. because every day should be a Happy Post Day. And stickers are always good.
Also included was a discount code for this shop for a free pair of silver earrings!
So what did I think of the box? I’m loving the various different subscription boxes that are available right now. It’s not just magazines anymore, you can get a beauty box or a snack box, and even your pet dog or cat can receive some happy mail every month. So it was just a matter of waiting for someone to come up with a box for stationary lovers. The Green Gables has done us proud. The products are really good quality, the card stock nice and thick, and the selection of products in the box are just right.

This Week…

I’ve been getting sucked into the world of Essential Oils as taught by my sister who is becoming quite the teacher. I’ve always been a bit sceptical of all things holistic, but as I’m getting older and more open to finding natural answers. I’ve also started to like the herbal teas, although I’m still not loving the fruity ones, I do enjoy an invigorating peppermint to lift me or to help get rid of headaches. I’m hoping to get a diffuser soon so that I can feel the benefits of the oils a bit more.

This weeks Studio classes have been an experience, I’ve tried Dance Fit and Body Balance as well as continuing Body Pump. More about those in another post.

I’m finding This Blogger really cool to follow, her pictures of London are beautiful. Also This Lady makes me want to get my arse to the gym more.

I found two more special editions of Mollie Makes, one for social media and one of creative spaces. They are more expensive than the regular magazine (which aren’t cheap in themselves) But they are thicker and jam packed full of loveliness. Oh and I had a money off voucher so that took the sting out of the tail a bit. These are really great and I’ve only managed to dip in and out of them, I can’t wait to sit down for an afternoon and read them properly.

This weekend you’ll find me at work. There will be tea. And cake. Because work doesn't have to be miserable and cake-less.

Getting creative with Adult Colouring

adult colouring2My sister introduced me to the new craze in Adult colouring books last week, and I have been sucked in. I bought the Secret Garden book of postcards which can be kept, or mailed to lucky people so you never now you may find one of these on your door mat soon.
I’ve been struggling to do anything much crafty lately, but this has got me feeling a bit creative. I may need my glasses though because the pictures are intricate and I don’t want to be going outside the lines!

So far my little book has been kept by my bed. With my new bumper pack of colouring pencils. (Which by the way are still in the container they came in because omg have you seen the price of pencil cases these days? and they are so teeny!) Mr D laughed and asked if I bought the pencils especially. Well of course I did. New pencils are a must.

I’m wondering how I missed this new craze in the stationary department, and I’m also wondering if any of you are colouring late at night like me?

This Week…

It’s been a full week, starting with the first adventure in the home on wheels, to Spring Break. The painting inside was finished just in time, and the weather was kind enough that we could sleep with some windows open so the paint fumes didn’t annoy us. The show is small, only in it’s 4th year, but it’s fun and friendly and the entertainment on the Saturday night for those camping is always worth it. This year we had a Burlesque show before This Band (who we danced all night too. Well I did. Mr D is still nursing a broken shoulder). I have nothing against Burlesque, I’ve seen a few shows and it’s always pretty tame and entertaining. Classy even. But. When you realise you kind of know the girl with her arse hanging out of her corset. Well That kind of put a whole different spin on it.
I worked several jobs this week which ranged from helping disabled people, to shopping, right through to serving tea and cake on cute china and wishing I’d worn a second pair of socks at an ice cream/coffee hut at the beach. That wind is not my friend.
I’ve still managed to squeeze in a new Netflix obsession though, in the shape of Once Upon a Time. I’m loving it 12 episodes in but it’s something to watch without Mr D, unlike the obsession we share that is The Blacklist.
Happy mail day came in the form of The Happy Paper Club. I mean really, who doesn't want to get pretty stationary through the letterbox. Review coming up soon!
Now it’s the weekend and we are going to see Davina and The Vagabonds. Excited.

The Gym Diaries #1

After all my talk of getting fit I’ve gone and done it. I joined the gym. I have only ever belonged to a gym once in my life for a period of about 6 months, it was a local, small place where I visited a couple of times a week to get ‘Courtney Cox arms’ for my wedding day. Since then, that gym closed, several others have opened up in town, and then there’s the local leisure centre which is a five minute walk away, but to be honest and at the risk of sounding like a complete snob, I just don’t like them. I don’t like the atmosphere, the decor, the cold water in the pool, the uncomfortable changing rooms.
Then my friend took me on a guest pass to her gym. It’s just outside town, it’s more than double the price of the local ones, but as soon as I walked in I knew I liked it. All the staff are super friendly, the place is clean, the atmosphere relaxed and there’s a separate changing area for children which it has to be said was appealing. I thought about joining for a couple of months before I took the plunge. I went over it in my head with all the ‘why don’t I just get my bike out and walk more’ and then there was the expense. Then I decided that at 42yrs old, I don’t have to justify it to anyone.
It’s a David Lloyd Leisure Complex, and it’s so much more than a Gym. Mr D laughingly says I’ve joined a cult. But he’s never been so how would he understand. It’s a whole different world to the gyms I’ve seen in the past. I have a peak membership, which pretty much means I can go anytime, as many times as I like, and visit the pools, (inside and outside) jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and the hundred million studio classes that take place every week, from body balance, to spin to everything in between, as well as the very high tech Gym. Then there’s the ‘healthy eating’ seminars. And I plan too. Do everything that is.
The first week of my membership I was ill, but I did drag myself to the steam room a couple of times and the Gym once. This week I started looking at the studio classes. I settled on Body Pump. Which my friend failed to tell me involves lifting weights, to music. Oh. One class down, one tomorrow. I’m hoping my aching muscles will allow me to actually lift the weight tomorrow. The class was pretty full, of people who obviously knew what they were doing, and then there was me. Luckily the instructor recognised me as a newbe and made it clear that I wasn’t expected to keep up with the others, that I could use the lightest weights and even rest now and then, which I did without feeling like a complete numpty. I just kept telling myself they were all in my position once. When I think back to all the times I ‘rested’ I’m so thank full that I did, as my body has been hurting in places I didn’t know existed. Goodness knows what I would be like if I’d really tried to keep up. Probably crippled.
So more Body Pump tomorrow, then Next week I’m trying out Dance Fit. Dancing, well I like dancing, how hard can it be….

Getting Ready

We decided to give the inside of the home on Wheels a make over. Goodbye chipped burgundy and dark blue, hello lovey blues and greens. Mr D has sanded and painted and varnished while I’ve been, well, not much help if we’re being honest. Just as soon as we have everything looking pretty I will take more pictures.
Today is our first adventure to try it out. Just as soon as I’ve bought some food, chose which books to take and packed enough jumpers (where is Spring?) We have been enveloped inside a big fog the last couple of days which is kind of spooky.
So this weekend we will be camping with friends, drooling over 1950’s cars, listening to Rockabilly, maybe having a little boogie if I’m feeling game, and reading. Hope your weekend will be just as fun!

This Week..

vintage trouble
The week started in Norwich with friends to see Vintage Trouble. Best gig ever. If you’ve never seen this band take a look at this video.
I eventually did the thing I’ve been wanting to do but was trying to justify the expense. I joined the gym. I survived the induction where I was shown around by Tom who measured and weighed me then told me I’m seriously dehydrated and need to drink 2-3 litres of water a day. He looked at me like I was a child when I asked if the flavoured fizzy stuff counted. I’m gonna feel like I’m drowning.
We started watching The Blacklist. It’s one of those just-the-one- more-episode and before you know it it’s 2am.
After that it all just kind of went to shit. Mr and I seem to have the plague. Or the black death. Or something. I’ve worked off and on and so has he but today it beat us and we didn’t get up until 3pm. I haven't bought any Easter Eggs, or actually anything to eat for Easter lunch. On the plus side maybe we’ll have to go out for eats.
